Pointsettias, 1962, oil on canvas, 18 24"
The Idelers lived in an upstairs apartment on Clinton Street, just around the corner from Esther's family on Serrano in Hollywood, CA. It was a two-bedroom apartment, and the bedroom facing the street became the studio. I remember the smell of lemons from their potted tree, and turpentine and linseed oil.
Everything about California fascinated the Idelers. My mother planted a Christmas pointsettia by her front door, and when it bloomed, picked an armful for her parents.
The vase is on a small wooden table. In the background right, you can see how my grandparents stored their work–in open home-made cupboards protected by a bedsheet curtain.
