The Ideler Library
As intellectuals, Martin and Leonie's library was an extension of themselves. They brought several bookshelves worth of literature with them when they emigrated to the US in the early 1960's. Some of it went to my mother, and some to my aunt. Mom was generous in her donations and gifts to people who seemed interested, so what remains in my hands is an odd mix. Fifty years ago, my grandparents selected what was most significant to them, and in the intervening years, the most appealing of those books have vanished. Nevertheless, I think at least some sense of their intellectual life in can be had from the surviving collection. Martin was bilingual in French and German. He didn't speak English well but could read it. Esther's books are intermixed with Martin's and Leonie's. I think they read aloud to each other and discussed freely, so it is not unreasonable to suppose that Martin read many of his children's books, one way or another.
Notes
Bruno Cassirer was a Jewish publisher, a member of the Berlin Secession. After Jews were banned from publishing, he moved to Oxford in 1938. Martin's issues of his Secessionist magazine Kunst und Künstler (Art and Artists), get their own section below.
The Insel-Verlag (Island Publisher) books are small, charming, and cheaply made. They are numbered, at least up to 650. They seem to have been an effort to compile the best of world culture.
Frustrtatingly, many of these volumes have no publishing date and some don't even have the publisher's information. As far as I can tell, they date from between 1906 - 1965.

He was banned in Germany after WWI. Inside the front cover is a packet of Hodler reproductions collected from magazines.

Esther put a typed piece of paper into the book for me in the 1990's, reading "Hans Carossa was a very popular poet and writer with my generation which sought refuge from the constant barrage of the Nazi propaganda machine, touting the "Grand Time" we were privileged to witness." Here is a rough translation of the first poem in the collection:
The summit seemed inaccessible. /Now we reach it so easily. /The first time it was a distant glimmering. /Now new vistas are reached. //Ancient rocks and vast lands/ Hover playfully ahead. /Cities which we passed through at night, /Are lit-up paintings. //Bright clouds scud overhead. /Their shadows pass over us. /Big blue butterflies flutter like books ahead of us.

This Goethe Novelle was illustrated by Vati's frined and my college professor, Bernhard Hasler, whose enormous knowledge of art, art history and universal literature, and whose philosophical wisdom helped us, his students, through the difficult times we had to face." Morgenstern, Christian, Melancholie: Gedichte (Melancholy: Poems), Bruno Cassirer, Berlin 1920. Morgenstern worked for Cassirer as literary critic. His poems were often humorous, but this booklet apparently is exactly what it says it is. Here is the first poem in the collection:
Zeit und Ewigkeit
Auf den Schwingen des Windes
die Stimme des Bachs
Der Wellen Gespräch
auf dem Atem der Nacht
Mein kleiner Wecker tickt dazu
O Zeit und Ewigkeit!
Time and Eternity
On the wings of the wind
The voice of the brook
The pulse of speech
On the breath of the night
My little clock ticks along,
O time and eternity!
Morgenstern, Christian, Der Gingganz, Verlag von Bruno Cassirer, Berlin 1920. There is a book mark at the following poem, a parody of a lullaby:
Gallows-Child Lullaby
Sleep, baby, sleep, / a sheep is in heaven, / the sheep is made of water vapor / and, like you, fights the fight of the living.
Sleep, baby, sleep, / the sun chomps down the sheep, / it licks it off the blue earth / with a long tongue like a dog.
Sleep, baby, sleep, / now the sheep is gone, / the moon comes and scolds his wife, / she runs away.
Two copies of Morgenstern, Christian, Palmstrom, Verlag Bruno Cassirer, Berlin, 1916 and 1920. The poems are humorous, but the book itself is a gem. It's printed on yellowing thick paper with deckled edges, each page a different size.

Esther inserted a typewritten note for me in the 1990's, reading, "Daniele Varé, an Italian diplomat, captivated your grandfather with his wit, humor and worldwise attitude. There are notes of repeated readings of Vati's on the back cover, so I send it although I did not read the novel. The Rowohlt publisher produced the Rororo booklets cheaply and abundantly after the WW2, to satisfy the hunger for books. The available paper quality was BAD, as you can see, but the variety of copies was amazing." Inscribed in pencil inside back cover, "read 1963 Los Angeles, Feb 1965 Los Angeles, April 1966 Torrance."

Esther inserted a typewritten note for me in the 1990's, reading "The 'Insel Bücher' were a favorite gift item among young friends, covering a large selection of topics. This Goethe Novelle was illustrated by Vati's frined and my college professor, Bernhard Hasler, whose enormous knowledge of art, art history and universal literature, and whose philosophical wisdom helped us, his students, through the difficult times we had to face." Hasler was also a student of Lovis Corinth.

Conferences and Yearbooks
Two copies: New Education Fellowship Conference July 1934, Children's and Native Work. Inscribed "For Esther Ideler from Martin Ideler 1952." It appears that the conference was in Cape Town. There is a short article by Martin Ideler in English, though he did not attend. While Martin was emphatically not a Nazi, hints of that ideology appear:
Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg, 1955 yearbook, with pencil inscription, "Sent to Mr. and Mrs. Norris Los Angeles, July 1956, by Martin Ideler. There is also a yellowing paper scrap inside the front cover, reading, "Most respected Mr. Professor Ideler, We hope that your visit to our County Art School will prove useful to you and your Hamburg Hochschule. We would also like to say how much we valued listening to your speech on America's art education. We hope that the (?) will be useful to you and your Hochschule." Page 44 ff introduce him as professor of art education.
v Wiese, Leopold, "Soziale Sicherheit und sozialer Aufsteig als Probleme unserer Zeit" [Social Security and Social Advancement as Problems of our Time", Soziale Welt (World of Sociology), April 1950. Leopold was some kind of relative of Leonie.
Zentralinstitut für Erziehung und Unterricht, Berlin [Central Institute for Education] The Art Departments of the German "Volks-Mittel und Hoheren" Schools aim at developing, through the media of drawing, colour and craft-work, the full personality of the child along natural and national lines. The lessons are given as a counter-balance to scientific study and to learning generally and are designed to develop the expression and feeling of the child.
The child of 6-7 does more drawing than writing. The teachers in general have not received a special training in art and allow the child freedom of development.
Some sample pieces of children's art follow. Apparently one of them is by Esther, but I don't know which one.
