Still Life with Primary Colors, no date, unframed oil on canvas, 36 x 42 cm.
The canvas has scissors-cut edges. This is very likely a student work, done to illustrate the use of paint straight out of the tube.

Still Life with Plant, no date, unframed oil on canvas, 43 x 42 cm.
The canvas has scissors-cut edges. I am puzzled as to the chronology of this painting. It is done with the palette of his youth, but has a splash and exuberance that you see in his later paintings. The paint is cracking off the canvas, meaning that he didn't prepare the canvas properly. If it was a student work, wouldn't his teachers have insisted on using the proper ground? If it was a later work, wouldn't he have figured it out?
1910's: Likely palette for this era
1920's: Likely palette for this era
1930's: Probably not, he was experimenting with earth tones then
1940's: Possible, since the materials are wrong and maybe he ran out of the proper gesso
1950's: Maybe, since this is done with practiced ease and the plant is one you could find in California.
1960's: Maybe.

Still Life with Wine Bottles and Teapots, no date, unframed oil on canvas, 48 x 42 cm
The canvas has edges that look like they were cut with scissors. Possibly Martin took this out of its frame in order to ship it to the US when he emigrated. The attention to detail and straight-up realism is unusual for what he was trying to do, and so I am guessing this was a student assignment. Yet ... the practiced splodges of colors on the reflective surfaces are pretty impressive for a student.

Railroad, unframed oil on canvas, 36 x 30 cm, ca. 1914.
Esther says that this was probably done with Martin's teacher Mewes, on one of their many field trips together. This is one of my personal favorites.
